127th/128th Sessions of the WCO Council was convened on 14-16 July 2016 at the WCO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, and was attended by a total of around 500 delegates from the WCO Member administrations, the observer international organizations and business associations. Mr. Kazunari Igarashi, Head of the ROCB A/P, attended the Council as an observer. The Council heard a series of the activities under taken by the WCO and new tools and guidelines developed by its committees, which were adopted subsequently. The Council also discussed way forward on a number of topical subjects such as Digital Customs, e-commerce, governance issues, Customs-Police cooperation, Customs-Tax cooperation, security initiatives, and the Customs roles in protecting cultural heritage, among other things.
In the course of the Council Sessions, there was a regional consultation session for the respective WCO regions, including the one for the A/P region, in where the hand-over of the regional Vice Chairmanship from Malaysia to Fiji was made. The ROCB A/P is so grateful to the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD) and the fellow colleagues of the Vice Chair’s Secretariat for their great contribution to the A/P region and to the whole international Customs community through the leadership of the RMCD Director General, Dato’ Sri Khazali bin Hj Ahmad, as well as their guidance and collaboration with the ROCB A/P during their 2-year long tenure as the Vice Chair. The ROCB A/P looks forward to continued collaboration with incoming Regional Vice Chair, i.e. Fiji, for the next 2 years. In the margin of the Sessions, Mr. Igarashi saw several Directors General/Commissioners and Secretariat officials and discussed/coordinated the Annual Work Plan and preparation of the upcoming regional/national workshops.
