WCO calls for high-level political support for enhanced coordinated border management for trade facilitation and border security

 

23 and 24 March 2017, Bangkok, Thailand

 

On the occasion of visiting Bangkok for the Launching Ceremony of WCO Security Project for Southeast Asia region, which was held on 23 March 2017, WCO Secretary General, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, paid courtesy visits to Vice Minister of Thai Department of Commerce on 23 March 2017, and to Thai Finance Minister on 24 March 2017 respectively. Mr. Kazunari Igarashi, Head of the ROCB A/P accompanied Secretary General to these visits. 

 

Secretary General and Vice Minister for Commerce discussed variety of topics, including surrounding environment and mounting challenges in the international trade and travel, including trade facilitation, border control and counter-terrorism.  Given that the Thai Department of Commerce is leading the country’s trade policy, Secretary General called for high-level political support for enhanced coordinated border management for the sake of trade facilitation and border management, which were supported by Vice Minister.  At the meeting with Finance Minister, Secretary General thanked Thai Government for its continued support for hosting ROCB A/P since its inception and Thai Custom in on-going reform and modernization under the initiatives of Thai Customs Director General to contend with a series of the challenges of the day, in which he stressed the need for enhanced coordinated border management through hands-on cooperation among relevant border control agencies.  Secretary General shared his views on the importance of capacity building assistance, which was echoed by Finance Minister.
