The 2023 WCO Technology Conference was held in Ha Noi, Viet Nam over the period 10 – 12 Oct 2023. Under the theme “Embracing the Digital Age: Leveraging Technology, Fostering Innovation, and Nurturing the Next Generation of Customs Professionals”, this event brought together various stakeholders from the customs administrations, academia and private sectors to examine strategies for leveraging technology to ensure resilience and supply chain continuity. This conference offered an opportunity to exchange ideas, explore innovative approaches, and highlight best practices that could be adopted by different administrations for better performing the core functions of facilitating legitimate trade, protecting the society and ensuring fair and efficient revenue collection.

Tran Luu Quang, Deputy Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, Nguyen Van Can, Director General of Viet Nam Customs and Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, Secretary General of the World Customs Organization were invited to deliver opening remarks. All the speakers emphasized the importance of leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance connectivity at borders.

Ms. YE Zhengqing, the representative from the ROCB A/P joined the panel discussion “Boosting Customs Control with Smart Solutions”. She discussed with presenters the challenges of keeping balance between "efficient customs control" and "fast clearance" and the shortage of human resources. With no doubt, the conference provided a unique platform for customs officials and private sectors to share experiences and exchange best practices to address these challenges that most Customs Administrations were facing at the moment.

This 3-day event was targeted to promote partnerships and cooperation between the government, industry and academia. An enhanced understanding within Customs administrations of the importance of data governance and building a data ecosystem and standardization in many aspects related to technology deployment were highlighted.
